WRITESHOPS:  A Tool for Packaging and Sharing
Field-based Experiences

ISBN 1-930261-27-6

In recent years, development practitioners and organizations have come to discover and recognize the writeshop as an effective methodology for the documentation and distillation of project learning.  A writeshop is a participatory and highly intenstive process which involves bringing together authors, editors, artists, and desktop publishing specialists to produce a publication in a relatively short time.  Writeshops are characterized by critical reviews and revisions, involving peers and a diverse range of stakeholders and users.  Writeshops have been found particularly useful in helping
field workers and practitioners document their experiences,
making field-based evidence more widely available.

A Writeshop Review workshop was organized in the Philippines in July 2010 that resulted in a series of three publications -- Workshop Proceedings, Case Studies, and A Guide to Organizing Writeshops.

This volume of Case Studies is a collection of experiences in using the methodology.  The cases are intentionally not presented as abstracts as is often done.  They are presented in abridged forms to ensure that the reader benefits from the details in the experiences shared.  This is for those interested in knowing what lessons can be learnt from other case experiences.

Using Evaluation for Capacity Development:
Community-Based Natural Resource
Management in Asia
ISBN 978-971-614-044-6

The Evaluating Capacity Development Initiative supports
collaborative research and learning in using evaluation to enhance capacity development for community-based natural resource management (CBNRM).  Its partners include research networks, academic organizations and NGOs/community-based organizations in East and Southeast Asia together with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada.

This monograph shares experiences and results of evaluation case studies undertaken by the ECD Initiative.  The papers were prepared by the study teams based on the main research reports, and were presented and peer-critiqued during a series of learning workshops.  The publication's central theme is that capacity development efforts become more effective when evaluation is integral to the process and its embraced by all relevant stakeholders.
